The song was written by French Composer Joseph Kosma and poet Jacques Prevert in 1945. Its name was "Les Feuilles mortes" ( The Dead Leaves). It was first heard in the French Film "Les Portes de la Nuit" in 1946. Johhny Mercer wrote English lyrics to it in 1947 and the American Jazz Singer Jo Stafford was an early recording artist. Edith Piaf also recorded it singing both french and english lyrics in 1950. Manfred Mann released a rock version of it in 1966. It is the corps song of the "Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps". Clearly it is one of the most popular songs of all time and has been recorded countless times over the years, most recently in 2000 by Raquel Bitton in her album Raquel Bitton sings Edith Piaf.

This arrangement is based on Dr Uke's chord structure but with enough variation for me to claim it as my own!

I play it slowly.

Wocky Steele March 2013.
