"Theory" - Major 7th Chords

GoChords.com

Major 7th chords are found by raising the dominant 7 one half tone. Which means you would sing - Do, Mi, So, Te

of the Tonic Solfa. On a music chart you will see it shown as the uppercase key letter followed by M7; or 7^, the

little delta sign, being placed in front of the numeral 7. Major seven chords have a pensive sound which is rather

difficult to describe. This chord is frequently used by Calos Jobim in his Brazilian songs eg Girl from Ipanema. Jazz

players like to finish on M7 instead of the Maj. I think M7 can sound like an m7 and I sometimes swap them over.

Let's look how we can play a Maj7. There are lots of basic shapes we can choose from. Let's go -

The forms of the first 3 maj7 chords in the above sample are capable of repetition semitone by semitone quite

someway up the neck of the ukulele. I find them difficult to play so I prefer other options, but there is no reason

why you should not experiment with this chord form if you can get the span over to the C & G strings shown here.

These are two FM7 forms which do not lend themselves to repetition. The FM7 at fret 5 is very frequently used.

Here is another way to play them. If you play this shape to fret 7 you will play a GM7. See how it looks like a

minor chord mirror in that the barred fret is modified by the A string being played 2 frets higher. When we play

a minor chord we first bar a fret and then modify it by playing the G string 2 frets higher......

We are all familiar with FM7 at fret 1 but then we can also play other M7s by adjusting our grip up to Fret 7.

TIP: It will help you get this shape by finding the minor 7 shape eg Dm7 (frets 1-3) then pinky over to C string.
