More than 60 versions of this song are listed in Wickipaedia. It was recorded first by the great stride pianist, Teddy Wilson in 1938. The Billie Holiday version followed in the same year. Since then male and female Jazz Artists have covered the song. Judy Garland performed it at Carnegie Hall on 23rd April 1961. It is regarded as a Jazz standard.
John Frederick Coots (1897-1985)
Started out as a bank teller, but by age 18 he had decided to become a song writer! He wrote over 700 songs which in addition to the song we are discussing included "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and the other Jazz standards "For All We Know" and "Love Letters in the Sand". He also wrote for many films and a victory song for the New York Rangers.
